【Question】My English is.......

Recommended Posts

Thanks for your correction first.^^

By the way, I have a couple of questions about writing.

Would you mind helping me with the questions? I would type them out.

It is an important English grammar conception in Taiwan to teach student the consistency of tenses. However, I am not sure the correct way to write.

For example,

I understood that he is a nice guy when I was stranded by some troubles.

↑How to decide the tense of the main clause and other clauses? Do this situation need to follow the rule? (I mean I was stranded by some troubles, and he helped me. From then on, I think he is a nice guy.)

My teacher said it depends on the situation I want to talk about.

However, I don't fully understand. Please help me with this problem. Thank you!^^

Firstly, thanks for your corrections.

Answer: I don't think I've made MUCH corrections at all.

Would you mind helping me with the questions?

Would you mind helping me with these questions?

I would type them out.

I will type them out.

or rather

I shall type them out below.

Tense isn't my strong domain so I'm requesting for any other people to help out with this question. Also, my explanation will be INCREDIBLY informal. Australia needs to do something about making a national standard of making schools teaching students grammar. My school only taught grammar in year 6 which is better than most other schools scarily enough (other schools don't even teach it and just assume you'll know your grammar - which is an incorrect assumption. My school even had to open special SPELLING classes because certain people were never taught proper spelling rules = =|||)

I say "will type them out" because you haven't done it. You are about to type them out in the very near future.

"I would type them out" refers to a thought, you HAD an intention of doing said action but ultimately didn't do so.

It is an important conception, in terms of English grammar teaching in Taiwan, to ensure that students are consistent with their usage of tenses. However, I am not sure how to utilize the rules correctly.

.....is what I think you're trying to say.

I understood that he is a nice guy when I was stranded by some troubles.

After helping me out from some troubles, I understood that he is a nice guy.

(though I don't really like the above expression)

Alternative:

After helping me out of some troubles, it became clear to me that he is a nice guy.

or

His sincerity became clear to me after he helped me out of some troubles.

My teacher said it depends on the situation I want to talk about.

Yes. It depends on the context.

However, I don't fully understand.

Hmmm....I don't fully understand your problem either. Here's a few links if it's any help.

In fact, maybe read through the entire article of the following wiki article, including the links on the right-side panel.

Ultimately, you need to narrow down your problem because....well, I'm REALLY not sure which specific problem you're having.
