No, I'm not a music major and no, not from UCLA - but you did ask "IN GENERAL" so I can at least provide information that I know of - IN GENERAL. Might be good if you can check if there's a student forum specific to UCLA? You might have a better chance than here...considering this is a forum thread for Taiwanese students who are abroad. It's not exactly a large pool of people here.
I'm a muso and to be honest, I was either going to choose between music or software engineering when I was applying for uni. Yes, big difference, but there you go so I've done enough research back in the days and know enough musicians which also include my various piano teachers who either studied at top music schools (eg. London College of Music, Juilliard) or are professors themselves at music conservatories.
From my various conversations with friends and teachers, experience varies very vastly depending on the college of study and more so, with the professor you are studying with.
I mean is it like you just attend private lessons with some professor?Ok....ummm....so.....did you actually check on UCLA's site to see the list of coursework you will be doing? Because that usually gives you a pretty good picture what you will be studying. As for actual experience, you have to start doing the degree before you know. List of courseworks is only the tip of the iceberg.
To the best of my knowledge with the few music conservatories that I've researched, private lessons are a must - but they also encourage ensemble experience. And of course, there are also written courses like musicology and aural/composition lessons. As I've mentioned before, it varies from uni to uni, but in terms of piano major, private lessons are a must - but you won't be able to get away with theory coursework. My previous teacher (he heads the piano major department at his conservatory) also mentioned about end of semester exams where performance majors need to prepare a repertoire - and of course, you get graded there - usually by a panel of professors (and according to him, teacher politics can get pretty catty which influences student grade. Yeah, not very comforting.)
I'm fairly sure you can just go to UCLA's music website and they will show you what course work you will be doing and that should give you some picture of what you will be learning. I have to say, I'm a little alarmed that you haven't done that already...... (well, at least it doesn't sound like you have)

Yes - seriously, that's really the bottom line. No one really cares (or should I say, no DECENT person really cares). At my work, we have Swedish, French, German, English, Canadians, Americans, Chinese and Indians. We can all speak English perfectly but we all have our own accent - but no one cares because we can all understand each other. Funny things do happen from time to time though.
eg. My French colleague sometimes still say things in the French pronunciation and it sort of goes like this:
Him: We're going to "The Province" (some restaurant) (but in French pronunciation).
Me: ProVInce (in English)
Him: Whatever. It was originally French. You stole our language.
Me: Yeah, ok. Fair enough.

What do you mean "how it would be like to study piano or music in general"?
As I understand, every university, especially music, are quite different so their experiences vary (I'd also imagine that experiences can differ also due to the type of professor you get).
Furthermore, for example, a performance major's experience differs vastly from a composition major (my friend switched from composition to musicology. The experience changed for her quite vastly).
So my own question back at you is, what kind of "answer" are you looking for when you're asking this question? Is there some sort of uncertainties you're worried about when you're asking this question?

I think most places have English brochures - especially if you're talking about Taipei.
Isn't there a cultural museum near Chiang-Kai Shek memorial hall too? I've never been there but judging by its size, it should have English brochures there too

The Taipei National Museum (the one in 228 park). I quite liked that one. QUITE sure it had both English and Chinese - I can't remember. My boyfriend enjoyed it (he's Caucasian) - but then I may had explained things to him if he didn't.
Chiang-Kai Shek memorial hall and Sun Yat-Sen memorial hall aren't too bad either.

這確實很難區分
英文並沒有任何辭來區分親情和愛情.
至少單單用"love"是沒辦法的 (and likewise, there are many concepts in English that is near impossible to explain in Chinese. Like "respect". I can never properly explain to my parents in Chinese what I mean when I want them to "respect" me as an individual because 尊重 is too much of a heavy word in Chinese than it is in English and that term is really only used for people who are "above" you socially in Chinese. Fun fun translation time *heavy sigh*)
我要表達的意思是，我本身非常重視親情的，因為這些年我父母對我好，我都能感受的到。可是我不相信愛情。I value the love from my parents very dearly because my parents had been very good to me. However, I do not believe in amorous love, or love that can be developed between two strangers
Note: I am NOT saying this is the way to explain the difference in English. This is how I would explain it. There are many other ways you can try and explain it but you'll just have to flesh it out in your own words. There is no handy term you can use because it doesn't exist in English.
Another way is:
I value the love my parents had shown me but I do not believe falling in love with another person.
There's plenty of other ways. Just explain as much as you can to get your meaning across.

Living in Sydney, Australia at the moment.
Been to Japan, Korea, Thailand, Fiji, USA (one day in Mexico - crossed the border at San Diego), Vienna, Italy, Hong Kong and next month, I'm going to Africa.
Funnily enough, I hardly been anywhere around Australia even though I live here - until recently (for work purposes). Recently been to Melbourne, Perth and Adelaide. Been to Gold Coast ages ago when I was a kid and Canberra as a school excursion (I don't know why, but apparently it's a good time to teach 12 year olds how the voting system and the government works rather than when they're 17/18 and actually CAN vote and probably will remember the system better).
One thing I found interesting about Adelaide is that there are A LOT of Taiwanese there. I don't know why but all I know is I'm in heaven during lunch when I'm in Adelaide. The closest Taiwanese place at my Sydney office is 10 minutes walk away =(

我哥一年多前念完MBA
所有MBA至少要有兩到三年的經驗(至少世界排名的MBA是這樣)
要不然, 根本不讓你報名
還有, 我哥還說, 沒經驗, 念MBA根本沒用
因為你沒實際的經驗來真正了解課裡教的內容
念也等於沒念
有些MBA還要求到五年經驗 (我哥說他三年經驗去念他還覺得不夠呢)
有能力, 哪怕找不到工
再說, 一個有經驗的學士, 種比沒經驗的碩士要強多了
而且, 念哪麼多書, 卻不懂的實用, 有什麼用?
我哥是在有三年經驗才去報名的
他不是商畢業, 而是Telecomm/Biomed Engineering
經驗是在台灣
還是找的到的啦!
至於在國外念研究所, 看國家而定
美國讀跟在澳洲或歐洲讀有差的
另外, 你有打算到國外工作嗎?
要是有, 絕對不要等到讀了碩士再找工
國外(起碼澳洲是這樣)很注中經驗
兩個沒經驗的人當中, 大部分會寧願情學士畢業的
因為, 兩個都必須花錢訓練
學士不需要付太多錢, 比較划算
我看到太多海外生到這裡念研究所再來找工, 根本找不到
我畢業也快三年了
要我說, 大學學的東西根本比不上實際經驗
能找到工就盡量去找
