Well, since nobody started a new topic.... i will do it.

Let's talk about some stuff like music, for some reasons, i still do not understand why people in taiwan adore artists such as good charlotte, linkin park, blink 182, sum 41... and those artists people talked about in the foreign music forum. For me though, i like music in its all forms, but in those discussions, people are always talkin about the same band/ artist, i do not mean to say that those people are lacking music taste or the motivationto find new music. It is disappointing that everytime when i introduced a new artisit or a band, there will only be perhaps just one dude or one chick left a comment... that is it, finished! I guess i am complaining, but, really! We need to listen to more different artists and different music types, ehh???

What do you all think?

Haha! Yes - I find most people here, when you ask to discuss about music or books, it's always the same titles but hey! Think about it. You think Taiwan REALLY has a broad exposure to all the music there is out there? I don't think even in the Western society many people have the right amount of exposure to *cool* music. I mean, if you listen to generic radio stations, you're only ever going to find Christina, Rihanna, Pink, Linkin Park etc.etc. (who, in my opinion are NOT true musicians - excluding Linkin Park - they're ok. Take Rihanna for example. She can't even SING and of course, I love it how her fans will defend by saying, "Oh, but she's only human! I bet YOU can't sing as well as her."

1. She can't sing and I mean, she can't. Her voice was digitally enhanced as are many other "singers" *cough*. Check this vid:

2. Her profession is a singer, no? If that's your profession, then you're expected to sing professionally. It is IRRELEVANT whether or not normal people can or cannot sing better than her. It's her PROFESSION. She's supposed to do better. If she's only average, requires external technology to make her *sound* professional and can't write her own music or ATTEMPTS to do so but comes up with sub-standard, generic lyrics (because the music is always written by someone else), then I have EVERY reason to criticize her all the way

*end rant*)

Yes, we need more exposure to a wide range of music. The radio stations are being PAID to play those music anyways. Ok - I'm posting random music links now:

JEFF BUCKLEY:

Man, I can't stress enough. Jeff Buckley RULES! Why is it that ALL the good musicians have to die so early? It's not fair! Anyways, just listen to everything here. Lovely flash player that has all his songs. Recommend Live at Sine and Grace. (album name that is)

This is my friend's music:

As for the site, just a bunch of aspiring artists placing their music on triple J unearthed and see if they get enough votes to have their music aired.

Chris Cornell's cover of Michael Jackson's "Billie Jeans"

Classical Music:

Ginastera's Danse del Guacho Matrero (love this! Played it in year 10 and still love it :p)

Penderecki's "Threnody for the victims of Hiroshima and Nagasaki"

Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring - Adoration of the Earth" (my favourite part :p:p)

Saint-Saens - Introduction et Rondo Capriccioso - played by Heifetz

Ravel's Bolero (2 parts) Note: Turn volume REALLY high else you won't be able to hear the initial snare drums

i think it's cuz of the commerce.

bands/artists as what you mentioned above are played over and over again on MTV which makes most of Taiwanese deem that there are ONLY those artists on the earth.

i currentl adore Teco. rock.etc etc, the ones for scenes.

Yeah....we are living in a commercialised world - unfortunately. The business drives the production of technology/artists etc.etc. (anything these days) and not the other way around.

The music scene of today is to recycle what's been successful over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over. Producers do not like to try anything new for they're scared that it won't catch on and will fail. Using something that's been successful is more guaranteed to be successful again. Unfortunately, this leads to the music scene not ever changing or improving for the past 20 years!

TV and radio stations, well, like any business (these days there are yet another business), want return of money, so as long as the recording labels pay them enough money, they'll keep playing the music over and over and over and over. The unfortunate fact is that, because we see them all the time on TV, their style and music had become internalised into our mental system, coupled with how fast people's lives go by these days, hardly anyone have time to stop and think, "Hey! They've been feeding us the same trash for over 20 years!" There's also the social side of thing - peer pressure. We've come to think that whatever's shown on TV is considered the current trend - the "in" thing. Especially in high school culture (which, unfortunately, is the main market of the current entertainment world *sigh*), if you're not into what's "in", you're not considered cool. This ideology unfortunately leads to the fact that many people are FORCED to accept or to like whatever's shown on TV because, in a way, it makes them feel "cool" *cough*

Wait - so what was my point? Hmmmm - I don't think I had one. I just ranted. Stop relying on what's given to you. If you start to believe or eat in everything's that fed to you without stopping and asking, you're slowly and gradually, becoming a slave/clone of the commercial machine. Bleh - whatever - I think I need to sleep at normal hours *5th day running sleeping at 4/5/6am* >_>

Yeah....MySpace do have a fair bit of artists there.....but I hate that site so I don't REALLY go there - I prefer YouTube :p

Good choice really :D

However, i cannot expect that everyone does the same thing like we do, because we are just better at it( take it easy ;)). I mean, those websites are in english, some people might not be able to comprehend the language... you know :P

so it might make things quite hard for them to do, like.... Jeff Buckley, i doubt there is chinese websites for him. Not even my current favourite band, Disco Ensemble... haha

i do suggest people to try it though, so much better than commercialised LKP, Rihanna( she is not even from the US! and she is trying to teach you how to spell umbrella by saying e, e, e, ella, ella ella, oh jesus christ!)

*shudder* Rihanna - she annoys me so much. What's with her voice? Sounds like a crow >_> - and the music video - I really don't need yet another young pop "artist" *cough* half naked (or just naked), strutting along and posing weird poses.

As for the language barrier thing, well, fair enough, but I don't really think it's hard to browse through YouTube. You're just clicking on random videos really. I think it may also have to do with this extra factor in Taiwan where English songs are considered "cool" so everyone just soaks up whatever English song they hear on radio and unfortunately, radio stations only play the ones that had paid them, leaving people with little or no choice.

IMO both sites are good. If youre talking about their f*ing registration, yes it really annoys me - I still dont have an account there. Has anyone else registered successfully? Anyways I just listen to good music, no matter what the artist is :p

MySpace or YouTube? Both are easy to sign up for me (though I hate MySpace because

1. It has way too many stupid teenagers on there

2. I get too many "friend"requests from frigging aspiring musicians

3. The worst coding ever. My friend hacked into a private profile within 3 seconds

)

By the way, my favorite star is Avril.

Hmmm - Avril....she can't sing either - I'm sorry, but it's true. Listen to her music. In fact, listen to her latest one, "When You're Gone." Nice song - ok lyrics - nice music video - but it's obvious they had to flesh out her voice. Also, hear her live. She goes out of tune. Those 2 factors puts me off an artist straight away.

Dont know whether theyve blocked ips from taiwan or not

Maybe. *shrug* Try facebook. Much better. :p

Errr - artist? If you're just looking for music artists, then use MySpace. You don't even need to sign up to find artists on MySpace. That's the whole purpose of artists using the music network on MySpace - promotion! In fact, their MySpace usually consist of them linking to YouTube videos so you might as well just search through YouTube for artists.

Facebook is really just for online networking - SECURE networking (kind of. Now they want to do public listing, making your profile Googlable >_>) or as I call it, MySpace for nerds with stupid teenagers and spammers excluded.

Id better not sign up there

Haha - well, technically, if you don't put any real details or photos on these profiles, what are these people going to do if they DO manage to hack into your profile? Nothing really. This is why I always use fake names when I sign up to things. I don't need my real information up on the net somewhere for people to view. (In fact, your MSN conversation is now legally viewable by American security - careful what you say these days *coughwereplanningtobombthewhitehousethisdecembercough*)

EDIT: Actually, you can find musicians on facebook - you just need to add the correct applications. Currently, there's like five band applications - none of which are to my liking really but whatever. Try them if you want. (considering writing an application of my own)
