【Chat】what do you want to major in the future?

my parents want me to do this, but mostly my motivation comes from myself; the starting salary attracts me overwhelmingly, lollllll

What's "pre-med"? Is it medical school? The starting salary may be attractive (if you're talking about medicine) but bear in mind, you have to study 6 years plus another few years of internship (not sure of the details) before you HAVE a "starting" salary - so in retrospect, it evens out with other degrees that takes 3 or 4 years to finish - they spend 3 to 4 extra years in the workforce in order to build up to that salary you potentially start with in the same amount of time but through studying.

-fine art/ interior design/architecture: They are all my interests, but not that of my parentsXD Indeed every personality assessment shows that art is my strongest field...

Interior design and architecture pays pretty well (Well, just architecture I think). In fact, all my parents' RIDICULOUSLY rich friends are all architechts. (and when I say ridiculous, I mean, RIDICULOUS. Picture Batman's mansion and downsize it by about 10 and you're pretty close. That includes his awesome collection of cars. And that's only ONE friend. My classmate in year 7 and 8 was also as rich as that and yes, her dad's an architect.) :p:p

-psychology: simply cuz i am interested in almost every field of this major, from social psych to criminology to abnormal psych to general psych and to whatever that's relevant to psych

Hmmmm - maybe you can think about psychiatry as well? Though you'll have to go through med school for that. My bf's mum's a psychiatrist. She's having it good at the moment. Works only 5 hours a day. Probably charges 100 or 200 AUD per client per hour, has the weekend off and can set holidays whenever she wants because she has her own clinic. Not bad at all... :)

Yayaya,

I was talking about pre-medicine, and it is also true that it will take, on average, approximately 10 years to actually earn that "starting salary." Moreover, some people cant even pass the MCAT, test for pre-med graduates, i suppose. But think about the safety and infallibility of this job!!! You will always have a secured and high-paying job as long as you dont retire, attractive enough hum? XD

And wow, i dont know architects can make that much money!!! I may have to consider this major well before my summer vacation startsXDDDD But isnt it true that if they made a trivial mistake that would eventually damage their design, then they would have to pay a huge amount of money to recover the loss? I dont want to take this risk, since i am not a great designer like the person who designed Taipei 101 or something like that...:P

I want to be a psychology doctor; i enjoy talking to people and helping them solve their mental problems.... it's gonna be cool if i can sit there and talk for 8 hours and still earn the money enough for letting my parents retire, isnt it?

Yes - but you also have to think about the amount of HOURS you have to put in. Unless you're a general or private practice where you can control your working hours, if you work at a hospital, I can guarantee you that you'll have to work 16 hours a day, so much so to the point you won't have much a social life or even time to spend with your family. I know of a doctor. He's 35 and even with all the stability and wealth he had accumulated, he still can't find a wife because all of them say they don't want a husband that is hardly at home - so there are certain elements worth considering about. Though, it's not like I'm against the career of medicine. It's definitely a worthwhile job - just there's a lot of factors people don't think about - particularly if you're an Asian kid. All those reasons you've given were the same that were given me when my mother wanted me to do medicien. ^.^|||

Nothing's ever as good as it sounds - there's always a catch so it's worth researching to make sure the catch is something you don't mind taking.

Don't make the mistake then? Oh, and just by the way - I need to clarify. Though those people I mentioned are architects, what they did in order to get that rich is start off with a land, design and build up that land (usually an apartment), then sell it. After they've received their profit, they then buy two pieces of land and the process repeats - and yes, that's how they accumulated their wealth. I'm not completely clear how the whole profession works of course but my only guarantee is all 3 architects I know are super rich and the above method is how they got rich in the first place.

I want to be a psychology doctor;

What do you mean by that? Having a doctorate degree in psychology or being a doctor specialising in psychiatry? There's a difference there.
