America Terrorized

The event1 of September 11, 2001 stunned2 the world.

At 8:45 a.m., a domestic3 flight4 slammed5 into the 110-story north tower of New York’s World Trade Center. Millions, both in America and around the world, watching coverage6 of the conflagration7 engulfing8 the upper part of the building were horrified9 and sickened when another airliner10 appeared from the right of their picture and exploded11 into a fireball12 as it ploughed13 into the south WTC tower.

President George W. Bush, at 9:30 a.m., came on television and announced1 that there had been an “apparent1 terrorist1 attack on our country.” But there was more carnage1 to come.

Barely ten minutes after the president’s appearance on television, a plan crash18 into the Pentagon19 building in Washington D.C. At 10 a.m., another hijack20 passenger21 jet, probably in it’s way to strike the White House22 or the Capitol23 building, went down in a field in Pennsylvania24. The United Stated of America, its people and its institutions25, were under siege26; terrorized27 form their own skies.

Flights within America were ground28. International flights were diverted29 to airport in Canada. It was only in the knowledge that the only planes in the skies were military30 jets that America got a modicum31 of respite32 from the unparalleled33 chaos34 that reigned35.

At 10:30 a.m., the unthinkable36 happened: the south tower of the WTC collapsed in a dust and ash-raising37 implosion38. People unable to escape the building and hundreds if firefighters39, police, and rescue40 workers were buried beneath a mass41 of rubble42. Forty minute later, the north tower collapsed.

The death toll43 from the terrorist acts will be in the thousands. America has vowed to lead its allies44 in stamping45 out terrorism46, its perpetrator47 and collaborators48, once and for all, in response to49 what has been termed an ‘act of wars.’
