二、原文《Even disasters overseas can reveal a nation's character》 (外國災難也能反映一個國家的性格)A nation's response to hardships and crises really reflects its national character. The Japanese people's calmness and order in the face of ongoing catastrophe is remarkable, living up to the stoic image that the nation has given the world. How about Taiwan? It has certainly also displayed empathy and sympathy in the wake of the multiple disasters that have hit a country that is a close neighbor. After all, Taiwan also experienced a catastrophic earthquake in 1999 that killed more than 3,000 people and has suffered some major typhoon-inflicted disasters in the last decade. These responses are rather natural and commonly shared by many other countries in the world, particularly those who have received help from Japan in the past during their own difficult times — which of course includes Taiwan. But it is the unusual responses and remarks that offer a glimpse into a nation's character. You may say it is a kind of slip of the tongue. One of the most outrageous remarks made in response to the Japanese quake was made by a ruling Kuomintang's aide who said Taiwan should not be helping Japan unless it returns the Tiaoyu Islands — a small groups of islands in the East China Sea claimed by Tokyo, Beijing and Taipei. The aide drew widespread condemnation. The lawmaker quickly fired the aide and apologized. One cannot help but wonder how many others in Taiwan actually feel the same way. Maybe not too many, but the remarks do reflect a love-hate relationship between the two countries. Japan is a favorite destination of Taiwanese tourists. Japanese colonialists ruled Taiwan for 50 years until 1945, and its influence on Taiwan is still tangible. But that is not the point we are trying to make here. It is the kind of political character that is being shown, where inconsiderate remarks are made that ignore human dignity. Taiwanese tend to politicize everything and anything. Look at the accusations against President Ma Ying-jeou over his alleged slow response to the Japan disaster. Politicians from the Democratic Progressive Party claimed that Ma was enjoying hot springs during a visit to the eastern county of Taitung on Friday while the Japanese were suffering from the earthquake and the tsunami that followed it. The presidential office quickly denied the allegations, saying Ma immediately flew back to Taipei to join the disaster response center before going back to Taitung to continue his official visit there. But he did cancel the last day of the trip. It again shows that politicians tend to seize every opportunity to make a complaint. In this case, the DPP side is trying to emphasize what it has always emphasized, that Ma is slow to respond to situations. But is the Ma administration really slow in its response to situations? We do not wish to digress to this issue and will leave it for readers to decide. Instead we will stay focused on our discussion of Taiwan's national character. We've seen one morbid response. The catastrophe has dealt a severe blow to Japan's economy, with many industries' global supply chains thrown into disarray. A magazine has cited a business executive from Taiwan's high tech industry as saying that Apple is expected to redirect large portions of its flexible printed circuit board orders from Japan to Taiwan. This seems natural, as Japan, with many of its factories having been damaged or suspended, may not be able to fulfill the orders, and Apple is also likely to revamp its supply chain to diversify its risks. But what is morbid about the report is that it says the executive “could hardly hide his joy” while talking about the possibility of receiving more orders. That executive may not be as cold blooded as he sounds. But it does reflect the business side of Taiwan. With Taiwan playing a key role in the global electronics industry, it is quite natural for that kind of business instinct to be constantly lurking in the minds of its business community and its people in general. In this case, either the executive was too carried away by the thought of possible business opportunities, or the magazine read too much into the executive's response. It is not the purpose of this discussion to indict to those who have made such “improper” remarks. We are only trying to show the underlying character of this nation. 文章全文來自:CHINA POST網頁http://www.chinapost.com.tw/editoria...-disasters.htm翻譯來自:我(有翻譯錯誤或建議請趕快提出)三、拋磚引玉,先給予大概方向大家比較好討論(1) 你或許會覺得說整篇文章是在數落立法委員助理說錯話和高科技工業主管潛藏不住的笑容,但作者卻喜歡在段落後面提到更廣泛的層面去否定台灣人,比如說『With Taiwan playing a key role in the global electronics industry, it is quite natural for that kind of business instinct to be constantly lurking in the minds of its business community and its people in general.』和『We are only trying to show the underlying character of this nation.』
