El Nino, a seasonal ocean current that flows southward along the coast of northern Peru,

is often associated with atmospheric changes.

Scientist generally refer to it as El Nino. The

current itself is warm, nutrient-poor,and relatively low in salinity.

Its name(Spanish,“the child”) is derived from its arrival during the Christmas season.

El Nino is an extension of the eastward-following equatorial

countercurrent,which turns south along the coast of Ecuador.

Every four to five years,a weakening of normally strong southeasterly

trade winds allows the El Nino current to extend farther south.

Water temperatures rise several degrees above average, with catastrophic results.

The higher temperature along the coast kills plank tonic organisms and fish,

thus harming the major fishing industry in area;important guano-producing birds starve abandon their nests.

A major disturbance affects other ocean-current patterns and causes widespread climatic changes
