【Question】What is the real goal that you think you studied English for?

Recommended Posts

As the title, actually I didn't like English a lot. I learned it only because my parents had me to learn.一_一狠Did everybody here could tell why did you want to learn English and how did you overcome the difficulties when you learned English? What reasons made you keep on learning English? It would be great if someone can share his experience.:)

If you master the language you can basically go anywhere you want without much difficulty.:E

And it's a great platform for receiving information and for communicating with people outside where you live. I'm not really learning English right now since the stuff they teach at school poses no great challenge to me.一_一狠 I'd like to have more opportunities to write more though:)

I didn't have a choice. I was thrown into an American language school at age 3 (all teachers spoke English. Don't even explain anything in Chinese). Then at 6, I was dragged to Australia with the whole family so learned by default. As for the reason, it's my dad's reason. His reasoning is English is the global language so you must know it.

I actually love English...

Well, I lived up to seven years old in New Zealand and studied at an American school when I came back to Taiwan (first to sixth grade).

I guess my goal was to be exposed in the subject I love most as much as possible XD.

Nobody can resist not thinking about the things they love, right XD??

I started learning English when I was about 10, as my mum said so, thus I basically became a typical person who either go to a cram school or has a private lesson, but honestly, I love English~ I want to be able to speak English fluently. Nevertheless, one day(in fact, not just one day, but it indeed happened instantly) I've came to Australia and went to a school here (I still go school here at the moment). Although I've had infenitely many difficulties (and still do) when I'm dealing with the language barriers, I love English! It's probably my personal interest that comes out of nature. I guess there's no such way (as you'd called it) to overcome the progress of learning English. It's just like learning other languages; you've got to feel the language, let's say your mother-tongue is like something part of you, and when you learn a new language (or more than 1), it'd be like getting this particular language part of you as well. Application, according to my cousin; the more you experience it, the more you know about it.

My English has improved far so much after I came to Australia, this is all can say. I mean, it's definitely hard to learn a language that is not based on the same basis of your first language, in other words, you need the environment, which is why I chose to go overseas (of course not everyone has their opportunity to do this). I don't just learn the language, but as well as the country's culture, the attitudes of people here, and different perspectives about life and many others etc. It's amazing...... I cannot actually know these things well untill I have actually experienced it by myself.

It's true English is useful worldwidely. One of my friends once said that it's awesome to know English (she speaks English), because the majority of great literatures are in English.

That's basically my story typed in a rather simple way :P One could consult me about anything if they wish~

English is a useful language, definitely.I didn't have so much interests in English until I entered high school.I met a friend who is interested in Western culture, she started watching English-speaking movies, listening English songs and anything else about American culture, etc,at her early childhood,I think. Her English is pretty good. She can speak English naturally in daily life as well as talk to others in English.I want to become a person who speak English as fluently as she,so that maybe future we can go abroad without bringing a interpreter =)

ha,I have a dream for my future, and the fluency of English is necessary.I hope one day,I can talk to others no natter foriegners or locals in English fluently as speaking Chinese. My friends stirred my love of English, and I love the transform!

As per title. I actually don't like English a lot.

Comment: I know you want to say, "如題" - however, your title is asking what people's real goal in learning English while the next thing you say is that you don't like English - doesn't flow on.

Also, I changed "didn't" to "don't" because the rest of your post sounds like you STILL don't like English - not sure if you USED to not like English. If you USED TO dislike English, then use "didn't".

I learned it only because my parents had me to learn.

Not going to comment about the starting sentence with "And" as you seem to think it's correct and is quite adamant about it. I still think it's incorrect simply because every single English teacher I've came across whilst growing up tells me it's wrong. *shrug*

Yeah....to the point that you sometimes have trouble explaining things in your mother tongue or that your parents reckon you're not Chinese enough due to Asian's stereotype of people raised overseas - a whole new different problem altogether. :p

Have you been to America or other English-speaking countries yet? If not, you should find a time and visit! =)

I am appreciating you!

I have a question about this sentence.

Could MiKiRei or other grammar experts help me with this?

Below is what I have heard about how to use "appreciate" this word.

(I mean when we refer this word to gratitude)

We do not say, "I appreciate you very much.",

but "I appreciate a lot what you have done to help me."

To put it more clearly,

we do not say, "we appreciate somebody." Is this correct?

One more question.....

"Thankful", this word, does not mean gratitude....right?

What I have learned is that "thankful" means we feel so glad or fortunate to get something that is not easily accessible.(in Chinese we say "慶幸")

Just like this sentence, "I am so thankful that we get there safe and sound."

Hoh! Hoh! Just some trivial questions, but I hope somebody can help me with this.

Wow, I’m empressed! I thought somebody would say 'cause I want to have hot and sexy foreigner girlfriend/boyfriend. :P

Well, I want to learn English because I watched lots of American movies and dramas when I was little, and I love their houses....everything.(especially music(L)) So I made a wish that I can live like them and talk like them when I was little. Now my dream comes true, I an in Canada for the exchange year.:E

Sometimes if you want to search something on the internet, Eglish articles are always more than Chainese articles and most of the English informations can give you more knowledge, so if you can know English pretty well , You will not lost tons of knowledgd!!!

Study English hard is not only for getting good marks on the tests but also communicate with the people around the world. = ]

Hahaha...I have a friend who learned Korean, Japanese and Chinese for that EXACT reason (he's ABC - and yes, the reason is to pick up Chinese/Japanese/Korean chicks = =|||)

You can say you appreciate someone though not used in that sense. For example, if you appreciate a friend for being there with you all the time, you can say, "I appreciate her for being there for me."

"I appreciate you".......certainly doesn't sound right though I can't exactly explain why. If you truly want an answer as to why it's never used in that way, ask in http://www.englishforums.com/

They're the true English geeks. :p:p

i actually started learning english at a pretty young age...like 7, i guess, cuz my dad was planning to study abroad. we didn't go at last, but i still went to those cram schools till i'm 13. my mom's reason is she wants me to see a broader world plus everyone else was taking private lessons, so why not join them?

when i was in TW, i usually considered myself one of the top students in my english class. this is probably why i have gone through a really hard time since i went to the states last year. i realized that i didn't master the whole language at all, even though i have learned it for almost ten years. i can't write sophisticated essays (you can see that by how smiliar my sentences look....they all start with "I" >"<), and my public speaking skills suck but i have no one to ask help from in TW orz

Err...aren't you overseas? = =""(your stat.) As for sophisticated essays...I can't write them either, heck, most of my Canadian classmates probably have a hard time writing them as well.一_一狠 As for the speaking part...I mumble sometimes too when I get nervous, probably because I think that my English is getting rusty.
