OPINION: Floridians must defend democracy - before it's too late

With each passing day our democracy is fading away – and that reality should be 
particularly obvious to those of us who live in Florida.

Gov. Ron DeSantis' administration has moved away from any pretense of operating like a 
democracy. The Florida Legislature is no longer part a separate and equal branch of 
government;  it is now a rubber stamp. DeSantis and the Legislature threaten and punish 
municipalities, individuals and corporations – and neither truly seeks to represent the 
people of Florida.

The Disney Co. is merely the latest example of this abuse of power, which has also led 
to direct attacks on the LGBTQ+ community and voting rights – as well as the violation 
of most of the 30 articles found in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. 

A governor in a democracy does not:

• Decide which books school children will read.

• Single-handedly determine health care for localities.

• Cut the budgets of local school districts to punish them for disagreeing with 
policies.

• Reduce voting rights.

• Dehumanize citizens of the state.
